India won the Cricket World Cup 2011 title with confidence last evening in Mumbai, India. In the event’s final, India overcame Sri Lanka by 6 wickets, thus claiming the world cup for the second time, 28 years after winning the world cup in 1983.
To reach the final match, India beat Australia in the quarter finals and then Pakistan in the semi finals. In the final match, Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bat first. They scored a total of 274 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in 50 overs. As India came to bat and chase the target, spectators expected to see some big start from veteran batsman Sachin Tendulkar and his opening partner Sehwag were sent out rather early. But the next line of hitters Mahendra Singh Dhoni (team’s captain) and Gautam Ghambir exhibited the most brilliant batting with Dhoni scoring 91 and Ghambir 97. India’s winning shot was made by Dhoni, a hug six that went off miles in the air and came down with the World Cup 2011 for India.
The Indian team and fans were tearful with joy, fireworks being shot up in the air right around the stadium. The popular cricket-themed song “Dhe Ghuma Key” (literally “Hit It Off”) was played aloud while the players congratulated and hugged and the cheering crowd celebrated. In Pakistan, many young people wished Sri Lanka to be winners (India being the traditional rival and also the extinguisher of Pakistan’s hopes for the World Cup). In Peshawar, many young guys sat in front of TV sets, silent and apprehensive. But there were Indian fans as well who exchanged sms messages, congratulating on India’s victory.
As India’s victory is being celebrated countrywide, Bollywood stars are also rejoicing over the achievement. The Economic Times reports that yesteryears’ superstar Amitabh Bachchan celebrated India’s victory by waving the national flag outside in the streets. He also blogged about it, exclaiming “We are the World Champions!” India’s legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar was quoted saying that she was confident of India’s victory and she congratulated the entire nation on it. Amir Khan, one of Bollywood’s top ranked actors, was shown present at the cricket stadium where the final match was played.
